How do I take care of my tree?

Make a fresh cut to the trunk – Once you arrive home and before placing your tree in a stand, re-cut the trunk at least ½” inch from the bottom of the trunk, even if you just cut it at the farm. The trunk end seals itself off after a period of time. The fresh cut reopens the trunk end so it can take up water.

Water immediately - After making the fresh cut, place the tree in a large capacity stand and fill with water. The stand should hold at least one gallon. The more water the stand can hold the better. The Old Barn offers high quality and large water capacity tree stands.

Place the tree away from heat sources - Heat registers and returns, space heaters, fireplaces, wood stoves, etc., speed up moisture loss of your tree.

Check the water level regularly - Do not allow the water level to drop below the fresh cut on the trunk. If it does, the tree will reseal and be unable to take up water any longer. Christmas trees take up a lot of water especially the first few days in the stand. Check the water level morning and evening and more often if the stand has a small water capacity.
